Summer newsletter 2017

Can you believe it’s December already? We hope you’re all getting in the swing of the festive season and enjoying all things tinsel, wrapping paper and catching up with family and friends. We hope you survived the wet weather and fingers crossed we get some beautiful sunshine soon!

In our summer newsletter we talk about how to make sure we're getting enough Vitamin D without increasing your skin cancer risk. We’re finding out about some exciting new products available at the clinic, and we say goodbye to Bruce who retired at the end of November.

We wish you all a very happy and safe holiday season, and an extra special Christmas filled with loved ones, food, laughter… and lots and lots of presents!

Until we see you next, be good to your backs and stay committed to your health. It has been a pleasure managing you this year, and we look forward to being of service to you and your family and friends in the year ahead.

Goodbye Bruce!

This November saw Bruce retire from osteopathic practice. Bruce has owned and worked at the Ballarat Osteopathic clinic for the past 26 years. He has been a wonderful mentor and friend to Kym and Sally and we'll miss his smiling face and hearty laugh around the clinic.

We wish him well in his future endeavors and will keep an eye out for him on the many golf courses around Ballarat!

Vitamin D - Sun Exposure vs skin cancer risk

Vitamin D is a hormone that controls calcium levels in the blood; crucial for bone and  muscle development, and in the prevention of osteoporosis. It can be found in some foods, but it is difficult to get enough Vitamin D from diet alone.

The sun is the best natural source of Vitamin D

One third of Australians are low in Vitamin D.....but 2 in 3 Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer by age 70.

So.....how much sun is enough? For light skinned people on days with UV levels of 3 or below they should aim for 2-3 hours of midday winter sun spread over the week to the face, arms, hands (or equivalent area of skin).

On days the UV level is above 3 light skinned people should aim for just a few minutes of mid-morning or mid-afternoon sun exposure each day. People with naturally dark skin may need 3-6 times the sun exposure compared to those with fair skin.
